CHAPTER TWENTY – Ecey’s Conquest of Land

ECEY was the daughter of a knight, Lord Otrice’s shield man to be specific—a liege pledged never to hold land or more property than she could carry on her horse. When the kings of the realm ran out of firearms and forgot the science of their construction, Ecey traveled between worlds to recover the secret of gunpowder and guns. She brought weapons back from that first and greatest quest. More importantly, she pressed a skilled gunsmith into service. As fate would have it, this man wouldn’t build weapons for those he disapproved of, and that was most people. Ted learned this and more during the grueling trek from the Rift to Lord Otrice’s castle after escaping the Dogean.

He sat on a stump in the castle yard, holding his head up with difficulty. Every muscle ached. His raw feet complained incessantly. Dirt, sweat, and blood caked his skin.

“There’s blood on that stump,” Koy said.

Ted parted his knees and looked between his legs. The stump was old. Layers of dark stains decorated the top and sides of the wood. He met Koy’s gaze. “I think this is the execution yard.”

Koy looked away, tears in his eyes. The same frustration and fatigue gnawed on Ted, and he wondered why he wasn’t crying. “Wait for my signal.”

Koy shook his head and held in his feelings. He was in no condition to fight. His thick chest, shoulders, and legs hadn’t served him well during the days of running. Injuries, fatigue, and the loss of Chuck Burns had taken a toll.

Ecey emerged from a building and walked toward him, removing her gloves and staring at him. She seemed ready to smile. Her warrior maidens flanked her, veering away as they neared. Ted stood and watched a woman approach each of his men and lead them away. Bridgette took Koy.

“Calm yourself, Ted Land. No harm will come to them,” Ecey said. She beckoned him to follow. “This way.”

“Where are we going?”

“I have certain rights as victor,” she said.

He followed her to a keep within the castle walls. Warrior maidens guarded the gatehouse. They whistled and catcalled. Ted found himself remembering a tedious in-service training on sexual harassment and felt oddly violated. One woman built like a triathlete slapped him on the ass as he passed. All the women laughed.

A woman who sat on a bench sharpening a sword glanced from her work, then returned her attention to the blade. “Ecey is as cold as a well.”

“But twice as deep!” another said. More laughter. More ass grabbing.

Ecey stopped and put her hand on the back of his neck. She forced him to duck as she propelled him through a stout doorway in one of the gatehouse towers and up a narrow, spiraling staircase. Ted stopped to rest and she pushed him firmly, taking one of his elbows for greater control. “You need a bath, Ted Land.”

He reached the top of the stairs. She moved him through another small door in the same manner as before.
